All India Radio-AIR India’s Public Service Broadcaster, officially known since 1956 as (Akashvani).
AIR is the largest radio network in the world and one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world in terms of the number of languages broadcast and the spectrum of socio-economic and cultural diversity it serves.
All India Radio (AIR), External Services Division (ESD) of broadcasts daily in 57 transmissions with almost 72 hours covering over 108 countries in 27 languages, out of which 15 are foreign and 12 Indian.
The foreign languages are English, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Baluchi, Thai, Burmese, French, Sinhala, Indonesian, Persian, Pushtu, Swahili, Tibetan, and Dari (General Overseas Service).
The Indian languages are Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Nepali, Sindhi, Punjabi, Saraiki, Telugu and Urdu.
ESD has five major services namely, Urdu (non-stop 24 hours), GOS/English (8 hours 15 minutes), Hindi (5 hours 15 minutes), Bengali (6 hours 30 minutes), and Tamil (7 hours 15 minutes).
External Services Division projects to the world India’s viewpoint, progress, and policies along with its art and culture.
With the changing scenario, its role has been further expanded due to an increasing number of Indian Diaspora, both PIOs, and NRIs as well as foreigners interested in knowing India.
ESD endeavors to provide them with information, education, and entertainment with programs on India’s varied and multifaceted society.
